Justin Upton

Carlos Gomez no longer leading off

Here lies the problem with relying on rookies in fantasy baseball. They are always the rage in fantasy circles every season, but yet they rarely live up to the hype. For every Evan Longoria or Ryan Braun, there are numerous failures, Justin Upton, Homer Bailey and Ryan Shealy, just to name a few off the top of my head, that most team owners simply forget about, no matter how much they overpaid for them at draft.

In my money league, I got burned by two of them season. Justin Upton and now Carlos Gomez.

The Hype Train | All Aboard!

Earlier in the week I outlined fantasy owners who, two weeks into the marathon that is the MLB season, were reaching for the panic button, ready for drastic changes.  Today, we'll take a look at the flip-side of the coin.  Invariably, every season players emerge, unexpectedly, and catch fire right out of the gates.  Some go on to have great seasons (Ryan Braun, 2007), and others, well, they go somewhere else (Chris Shelton, 2006).  Let's take a look at a few of 2008's most popular candidates, and discuss which road each might travel...

Man Child

Great little write up here on Justin Upton from his hometown rag. I was happy to snag Justin up in 3 of 4 leagues, and I will add, that every-time I reached a round or two early for the kid, I got grumbles from the other owners.

Kind of gives you the warm fuzzies doesn't it?

It did me. :)

Cueto

Not like I can hide this guy from anyone here, Cueto just threw a perfect 5 innings against Arizona in his MLB debut. Justin Upton just took him deep to lead off the 6th, but he came right back and got a comebacker from Hammock, then struck out Salazar and Young with a 98 MPH fastball.

Kid looks really good, filthy change, somewhat reminds me of K-Rod in his mechanics.

Young and gifted

Dayn Perry gives some insight to 10 players you will hopefully hear lots about this year. Some you already know, some you might not.
