Chase Headley

Heads up on Headley

Solid Advice.

He’s worth drafting, but only a late-round flier. Let someone else overvalue him

FanGraphs Fantasy Baseball : Heads up on Headley

Thus, while Headley does possess power, his minor league track record may overstate just how much power he has. Furthermore, Headley plays for the San Diego Padres, which means that he has to play half of his home games in PETCO Park. PETCO, as you probably know, absolutely kills homers, hurts doubles, is relatively neutral on singles, and inflates triples. Judging from what we know about Headley, PETCO seems like it will hurt him even more than it might hurt another player – Headley won’t put too many balls in play, and will lose a tremendous amount of homers (and doubles, not that fantasy players care too much about them) thanks to his home park.

Peavy back next week.

In his regular weekly radio show, Kevin Towers said that Jake Peavy will not start this weekend against San Fransisco, but he should be back the week after.

Also, Chris Young is out for at least another month, do to the small fractures in his skull.

Kouzmanoff and company

Fangraphs just posted a good write up on the friars third base position.

Optioned

Tis the season for roster cuts. 30 Major league teams need to get the crew down to 25 men, and Tony LaRussa is not too concerned with how it affects your fantasy roster. Sorry.

Headley takes Lincecum deep

Chase Headley seems to be doing everything in his power this spring to win an MLB job. With Jim Edmonds going down for a few weeks, the opening day gig in left field is truly Headley's to lose.

But be cautious before you jump to acquire Headley for your fantasy team this season, as Chase will most likely platoon with Scott Hairston once Edmonds returns, and they all call Petco park home.

Kevin Towers chat

It sure looks to me like Chase Headley will need to strut his stuff right as spring training opens. I dont think he is going to get the kind of lee-way that Kevin Kouzmanoff got last spring, with his paltry .189 batting average. Kevin was given that lee-way because the options at third base were virtually nill, and everybody knew the kid can hit.

With Kevin Towers openly talking about trading for another corner outfielder [he mentions it a few times in this piece], Chase Headley's 2008 window keeps inching closed, before he is even given a real shot at a gig.

and oh yeah .. welcome home Mark Prior. "..come June is the equivalent of bringing in an ace starter at the trade deadline, without having to give up prospects"

Padres to begin Headley experiment

hey, if the kid can rake like he has been projected, let's get him in the lineup. Every scout I have read claims Chase Headley has nothing left to prove at the minor league levels. Let him play.

I love Scott Hairston as a fourth outfielder in '08. He is not a hack with the glove, so he can fill in at all three spots in a pinch. I think Hairston is good for 18-20 HR's this season. He just needs the ab's. 400-450 would be solid. Hairston has that kind of pop in his stick. Kevin Towers stealing him from Arizona, for a pitcher with a broken arm, in the heat of a pennant race, was a fargin coup!

Chase Headley: What can we really expect

Corey Brock covers the San Diego Padres for MLB.com. This is from his own personal blog

I think that Headley is a good enough athlete to make the transition to the outfield, though he'll certainly be a work-in-progress for a while. Left field plays pretty fair at PETCO Park, unlike right field where there are many more nooks and crannies, ones that Brian Giles seems to handle well.

My best guess is Headley works into a platoon situation in left field with Scott Hairston with more at-bats coming on the days when Hairston fills in for Jim Edmonds in center field.

The Padres love this kid and turned down plenty of offers this winter to hang onto to him. We'll see if that was a smart move. My guess is that it was.

Towers sticks with Kouz at 3B

Kevin Kouzmanoff struggled out of the gate last spring, but he eventually turned it on and in reality became one the Friars best hitters. Rumors of his defense and back trouble never really surfaced as he held his own all summer long.Look for Kouzmanoff to take his game to another level in 2008, and land a spot in the middle of the batting order.

Towers also said Monday that the team will stay with Kevin Kouzmanoff at third base next season and that rookie third baseman Chase Headley, the MVP of the Texas League, will likely take fly balls this winter to see how he takes to the outfield. "After last year, it's kind of hard to move Kouz," Towers said
