Jake Peavy

Peavy might be back sooner than expected

Ah nice. There in lies the difference between an annual pennant contender and an annual last place team. The Padres were saving Peavy for next season, because they could. Don't believe me? When was the last time you heard anything with regards to Chris Young? He was only supposed to miss a start or two, remember.

Peavy could face the Yankees if his timetable accelerates. The Sox visit New York on Aug. 28-30. ''That's the goal,'' manager Ozzie Guillen said. ''We look at the schedule and think that's the [series] we think he should be ready for. That's the biggest reason -- we have a tough schedule for the end of the season. Hopefully, he'll be there when we go there. I hope he'll be there before that, but that's what we're shooting for and that's what we should be doing when we go to Boston and New York.

''I've got a feeling he's going to be out on the field sooner than what we think. I don't know why, but the thing we have going on right now, I think he sees his teammates, the way we work here, how we have fun. In the meantime, when the game starts, everything is about the game. ''The good thing is it's not his arm. We have one of the best trainers [Herm Schneider] in the game. Our medical staff is very, very good, and that's one of the biggest reasons the organization took a shot at him. Hopefully, he'll be healthy as soon as possible.''

Peavy showing steady improvement

The prospects of ace Jake Peavy pitching for the Padres again this season improved considerably Thursday with the sight of him walking around without a restrictive boot, then even more when he was able to play catch from 60 feet on flat ground. Contrary to thoughts that the Padres might simply shut down Peavy for the rest of the season and preserve him for 2010, the pitcher sounded eager to get back to rehabbing the troublesome right ankle after yesterday's examination by medical personnel proved positive.

“Getting out of the boot's a big sigh of relief after five weeks,” Peavy said. “I was super-excited just to be able to play catch for the first time, and all went well. I haven't thrown in five weeks, haven't been able to walk (without the boot) for five weeks. Now I'm walking around pain-free and looking to start getting stronger.” While saying he and the team would “let my body guide us as we go,” he anticipated a rehabilitation stretch of approximately five weeks.

“I can't imagine, the way I feel today, not being able to play (before the end of the season),” he said. “I can't imagine it taking 10 weeks to get my arm ready to play.”

Jake done for the year?

Well that blows. Even if it is the right thing to-do, it still blows.

What you see now with the Padres is pretty much what you are going to see for the rest of the season. Which, among other things, means you might not see Jake Peavy again.

“I think it's 50-50 if Jake will pitch again this season,” Padres General Manager Kevin Towers said this week as he projected the second half of the Padres season. “We'll know more when he comes out of the cast. I can't speak for Jake, but I'd much rather have him ready for 2010 than risking more serious injury by coming back too early this year.”

The latest on Jake Peavy

The news keeps getting progressively worse here, and Corey is all .. "Cheers"! It almost makes you want to kick him.

  • As for today, here's the latest on pitcher Jake Peavy. He was looked at today by the medical staff.
  • Also, pitcher Shawn Hill is done for the year and, possibly, parts of next season after having Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last week.
  • First baseman Adrian Gonzalez injured his right knee in Tuesday's game. The team is calling it a strained right knee. He'll be looked at again on Wednesday where we will likely get a time line on how much time he will miss, if any.
  • Also (again) former Arizona manager Bob Melvin will be joining the Padres, possibly as early as Wednesday. Stay tuned. He'll likely be an adviser to GM Kevin Towers.

Cheers, Corey Brock

Padres ponder life without Peavy

Jake Peavy is already restless. “I'm getting this thing cut off,” the pitcher said Saturday afternoon at Angel Stadium, looking down at the solid cast immobilizing his right foot and ankle.

“I can't do a thing in this ... four weeks in this and four weeks in a walking cast, no way. I'm supposed to be starting tonight and I'm in a cast. I can't do a thing.” Which, of course, is the reason for the cast.

No one is surprised that Peavy is an impatient patient. But for at least the next month – and probably double that – the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner will be sidelined. What does that mean for the Padres?

Peavy could miss as many as 12 weeks

it just keeps getting worse

Optimistically, the Padres are hoping Peavy – the subject of trade rumors and attempts since the end of last season – will be ready to pitch shortly after next month's All-Star break.

But Padres trainer Todd Hutcheson said Friday night that it could be eight to 12 weeks before Peavy is fit to pitch again.

Peavy trade to White Sox may be near

I bet he says no.

According to Padres personnel, Peavy met with Padres manager Bud Black late Wednesday night to discuss a trade overture from the Sox.

Peavy, whose consent would be needed for a trade to any club, declined all comment after meeting with Black.

Within the clubhouse, though, Peavy referred to the situation as “something to think about” yet also restated his desire to stay in the National League. One of Peavy's teammates said he believes Peavy respects the Sox's aggressiveness in pushing for him but may have reservations about pitching for Ozzie Guillen, the White Sox's volatile manager.
