Johan Santana

Game of the Day, Wednesday 8/27

Someday, these game of the day posts will be a catch all for in game commentary type things. I didn't post a game of the day thread yesterday, and then later wanted to post a few comments about the Padres smacking around Brandon Webb, and I couldn't. I was denied.

Here's todays game.

Opening Day Reflections

Most teams have now played at least one game. Your Ace has been roughed up and your stud hitter went 0-5. Is it time to panic?! Surprised

Of course not! But here are a few early reflections on yesterday's games.

Draft '08 | The Dos and Do Nots

As many of our Fantasy Baseball '08 Drafts fast approach (or have already approached), it seems like a good time to go over a few of the Dos and Do Nots that could mean the difference between participating in next year's Master's League or next year's Pond Scum League...

Don't Misremember 2007

A few random, scatterbrained notes about last season, you may or may not have known...

...Brad Lidge recorded 19 Saves from July 17th until the end of he season...

...Ryan Braun bat .450 in 111 AB against Left-Handed Pitchers...

...Despite Coors Field playing more neutral, Matt Holliday hit 25 HR in 327 Home AB, and just 11 HR in 309 Road AB...

Barry Zito | A 2nd Look

A year ago this time, the buzz was on a left-handed, former Cy Young Award winning hurler, switcing from the bat heavy American to the more pitcher friendly National League.  Sound familiar?

Well, as a Mets fan, I can only hope that as far as the upcoming season goes, that's where the comparisons between soon to be 30 year old Barry Zito of the San Francisco Giants, and Mets' new Ace Johan Santana, end.  But that's not what I'm talking about today...

SP Analysis... The Remix

I have a guest blogger today...Jordan Flemer, better known as Mugrila over at the Fantasy Baseball Cafe, and a damn fine fantasy player...

Starting Pitching can wait…unless it's Johan

As a follow up to Brendan's pieces on starting pitching, I’d like to plead my case for Johan Santana as well as follow up on my team in the same draft.

Next Stop... Shea Stadium...

USA Today broke news today that has the greater Queens borough and Mets fans worldwide jumping out of their seats.

The headline reads...'Twins agree to deal Santana to Mets for prospects'. I nearly jumped out of my seat -- no, I'm not kidding.

Buh-bye

Justin Morneau, the 2006 American League MVP, agreed to a 6 year $80 million dollar contract on Friday. The deal, the largest in Twins history, set Justin Morneau and his family up for life!

In order to get the deal done, Morneau agreed to give up his first three years of free agency to the tune of about 15 million per season. I guess you can call that 'giving up', right?

Also on Friday, Micheal Cuddyer agreed to a $23 million dollar deal for three seasons of his services. The Twins hold a fourth year option at about $10 million.

So. Morneau and Cuddyer will be the face of the Minnesota Twins, whilst opening a new ballpark in 2010 .. Yeah!

But this is a ton of money for two very good, but not great players. Coming from an organization that doesn't really toss around a ton of dough.

More importantly, what does this mean for Johan Santana, a once in a lifetime type talent? A truly great player.

Mets gaining in Santana race

What a crap package. I cannot even believe that the Minnesota Twins would even listen to that offer. Outside of Carlos Gomez, who essentially brings nothing but speed to the game, the Twins would be trading a two time Cy Young winner for a leadoff hitter, and a small handful of hopefulls.

Twins "Estate Sale" Continues, This week: Johan Santana

They should call it an 'estate sale', not a sweepstakes. A sweepstakes assumes that everybody in the room gets a ticket, when in reality only three or four teams do.

"MLB doesn't like it, but the reality of the situation is that only a handful of teams, the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Angels and maybe the Dodgers, can pay what (Santana) is looking for," a team official said. "But that's the way it is because he is looking for $120 million for six years and he is the best pitcher in the game."
