Ortiz heads to the DL

If David Ortiz is indeed out for the season, could the Red Sox possibly make a run at Todd Helton? There has been smoke on this hill in seasons past, and Heltons contract is obviously a touch cheaper now. It helps that the Rockies are going nowhere this season.

Just a thought.

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a partially torn tendon in his left wrist, manager Terry Francona said Monday night. Ortiz hurt his wrist while swinging at a pitch Saturday night in a game against the Baltimore Orioles. He missed Sunday's game, then left the team for Boston, where he underwent an MRI on Monday. The injury was determined to be a torn ECU tendon. "Surgery is very unlikely," Francona said.

Sad day in Red Sox nation - hoping for the best, but at least Jacoby should be in the lineup every day now!

Did the Red Sox just dodge a bullet?

"The integrity of the tendon hasn't been comprised at all, so that's why the doctors are pretty confident that if it's immobilized in this hard cast for a period of time, that there's a pretty significant chance that it'll heal itself in that time period," Epstein said.

The ultimate hope is that surgery won't be required and Ortiz will return to the Red Sox's lineup later this month or next. "I don't think the doctors think that's going to happen," Francona said, when asked of the possibility of surgery. "The idea is that it heals over with scar tissue and he's not a risk [for reinjuring the wrist]."

It's essentially two to three weeks," Epstein said.
