Drop It Like It's Hot

As I scour the countless sources, blogs, message boards, etc. etc. that I read daily from March through September (let's be honest, all year), I can't help but notice something... Today's date is April 24th.

Now, I know what you're saying.  "... And?"  To that I say, "And, why on Earth is every struggling player not on Yahoo!'s Can't Drop List being dropped left and right?"

In my 6 leagues this season, the following players have all been dropped at one point this season (the bolded I am guilty of dropping myself):

Kenji Johjima, Aaron Hill, Joey Votto, Jon Rauch, Ted Lilly, Jeremy Accardo, Ryan Theriot, Ervin Santana, Andre Ethier, Kelly Johnson, Phil Hughes, Corey Patterson, Jeff Kent, Todd Helton, Randy Johnson, Derek Lowe, Jason Kendall, Heath Bell, Jonathan Sanchez, Jeff Keppinger, Johnny Damon, Troy Percival, Rick Ankiel, and Juan Pierre.

Now, some of those are more eye-popping than others, but when you take into account some of the names who were picked up as replacements (let's just say, they didn't all make it into my Hype Train or Cheap Sources entries), it can get a little more head scratching worthy.

Here's the question, though: Why?  Why are people dropping perfectly healthy players after a bad week at the plate, or a 5 ER outing?

Well, for starters, the articles they read are telling them to.  This morning Yahoo!'s Andy Behrens challenged his readers to defend their Andruw Jones ownership. Tim Heaney from KFFL has a Diamond Market - Falling blog piece up where he outlines players to Hold, Stash, or Drop.  The only Drops he really recommends are in shallow leagues, or on players who had no business being owned in the first place; so he's not fueling the fire too badly.  However, there are a large number of people out there who follow these articles as gospel, and when you see Andruw Jones' Drop-O-Meter skyrocket on Yahoo!, you'll see that.

Now, I'm not saying that Andruw will turn it around, oh no.  I didn't draft him in any leagues -- I knew that going in.  But certainly if I had projected him differently, and had expectations higher than I had, I wouldn't be changing them all too drastically after 69 AB in a new uniform.

So, if we're not dropping these players, what are we doing with them?

We're putting them on our bench.  Letting our fantasy players ride the pine.  Yahoo!'s standard league format allots five (5) bench spots on a roster.  There are various strategies with regard to bench formulation, but one thing I'm certain of -- reserve one spot for a player who is under-performing but has no business being dropped.  The rest, do what you will with -- I generally carry as many pitchers as possible.

Case in point, in the aforementioned Behrens' Roto league that I am a part of, I added Mark Reynolds to my roster on 4/9, at which point Johnny Damon, my Utility Player, was batting .200 with 2 R and 1 RBI.  Now, instead of dropping Damon, who has since hit 3 HR, stolen 3 bases, and raised his R and RBI totals to 16 and 13, respectively, I relegated him to my bench, where he remains even today.  Reynolds has been a tremendous fill-in at Util., and with a GP limit, getting Damon in has been difficult, but he's contributed when some of my other OF have had poor match-ups, and I'm generally satisfied.  The rest of my bench is filled with pitchers.  Oh, who did I drop for Reynolds, you ask?  Well, it was a player who had only seen 15 AB up to the date of the drop, and whose manager I thought I would be infuriated with all season for stifling his potential.  I dropped Joey Votto.  No, I don't want to talk about it...

Look, the point is -- players start slow.  Scratch that.  Some players start slow (other players are Chase Utley), and it should be noted that some of these 2-for-15 streaks that have you hitting the Drop button go wildly unnoticed in June, because you don't see it in their season totals as much.  At this point, every AB still weighs so heavily on a players' AVG, that a guy can raise his .040 with a 4-for-4 day.  It's not a sprint, folks.  The guy in first place on May 1 doesn't get the cash prize or the trophy.  So before you go dropping Victor Martinez or Troy Tulowitzki, remember it's not even May yet, and as the weather heats up, so do a lot of players.

So be patient, young grasshopper, for the player you drop today may be the player your rival scoops up and wins your league with tomorrow (See: Justin Morneau, '06).

Until next time...

Great write up Hort and all too true. I have done the same thing many times and lost my league because of it. I really need to learn some patience with my team. I am still regretting when I grabbed Holliday in the 8th round 3 seasons ago  in my money keeper league and dropped him a month in after he hit a slump. A guy grabbed him and now has Holliday at a great value for years to comeYell

Here is a list of players dropped in the last few day in the Inglewood challenge. Kind of makes me wish i had more roster room

Billy Butler (KC - 1B,OF) Gary Matthews Jr.J.D. Drew (Bos - OF) Jason Bay (Pit - OF) Juan Pierre (LAD - CF) Michael Bourn (Hou - CF) Milton Bradley (Tex - CF) Pedro MartínezDL (NYM - SP)

Actually Pedro Just got picked up, but he was on the wire for a bit.

I had to drop Butler to get Bay; he was the weakest link to my team. Either him or Buchholz.

I've had the same issues.  As stated I dropped Votto in order to get Mark Reynolds, who I felt was necessary insurance for my 3B, Chipper Jones.  Of course out of context I look foolish, and maybe I am, but some of these drops are hysterical.

I actually had someone ask me about dropping Bourn today.  Here's the kicker -- it was in order to pick up Jacoby Ellsbury!  And this is a competitive player in competitive leagues!

I do, however, quite frequently, run into the problem of not having enough roster spots for players I want, so its a decision; sometimes I look good, and other times I'm the guy saying, "Yeah I would've picked him up, but I couldn't drop any of my studs for him..." as he tears it up for my competition.

Thus is fantasy baseball.

I have the same issue about not picking up people because I would have to drop someone I feel is more talented.

I see Butler being dropped in so many leagues recently

Is in the midst of having a breakout season.

The other half is already solid.Cool

I'm tied for 9th right now, but not real unhappy with being 5.5 games out of first. I really need to let this team settle in, WR and I seem to be having a competition with Ayebatter for the moves lead, and it's not a lead I want. I'm the one who dropped Drew, picked him after his hot start and my reverse Midas touch went into effect as JD immediately went cold. I'll take a chance that Quentin outperforms him from here on out, his average is trending up and his power numbers look good so far.

I see a lot of crazy drops too in my 4 leagues, some guy gave up on Hart today. He'll soon be on my Bloody Sox team. I guess I'm as guilty as anyone of "riding the hot hand", but I definitely need to be careful about making too many moves in the H2HWS.

Anyway, my team as of tomorrow:

C Joe Mauer (Min - C)
1B Conor Jackson (Ari - 1B)
2B Chone Figgins (LAA - 2B,3B,OF)
3B Mark Reynolds (Ari - 3B)
SS Hanley Ramírez (Fla - SS)
CF B.J. Upton (TB - 2B,CF)
OF Matt Holliday (Col - OF)
OF Ryan Church (NYM - CF)
Util Casey Kotchman (LAA - 1B)
BN Troy Tulowitzki (Col - SS)
BN Carlos Quentin (CWS - OF)

SP Fausto Carmona (Cle - SP)
SP Gavin Floyd (CWS - SP,RP)
RP Jason Isringhausen (StL - RP)
RP C.J. Wilson (Tex - RP)
P George Sherrill (Bal - RP)
P Pat Neshek (Min - RP)
BN Daisuke Matsuzaka (Bos - SP)
BN James Shields (TB - SP)
BN Shaun Marcum (Tor - SP,RP)

If these guys hit like they can and I get a bit of love from the starting pitching Gods, I should be OK.

Most of the eye-popping drops I do, occur in the H2HWS as with holds, setup men have a plus other than holding down your era and whip, being that I usually carry two more starters or one more starter and one more hitter in those positions. With H2HWS allowing you one less roster spot, I often do not have someone available to fill in when I need to make a roster move, poor performance or reactivate a disabled player, hence someone has to go and it is usually the guy hindsight woulda told me not to drop.

I have noticed the same is true of others, also.

Public leagues, with only one DL position, it is a goldmine, got Curtis Granderson in two leagues this year, Longoria in three and Joey Votto in one. Who did I drop, hmmmm - Matt Kemp or the Kouz in most cases.

Well I think it is safe to say that Pittsburgh figured out Jon Sanchez

I picked him for the two start week. Go ahead and blame me, all you Sanchez owners.

The Artful Dodger's picture

Sanchez is going to be so hit and miss. I wouldn't blame you for starting him with the matchup being lukewarm.
