Jerry Manuel was influential in keeping rookie Fernando Martinez in the majors with Ryan Church coming off the disabled list yesterday.

The manager acknowledged his philosophy regarding young position players differs from the organization's. Manuel believes that if Martinez can get 250 at-bats in the majors during his first season, it's more valuable than everyday play in the minors. While Manuel managed the White Sox, the skipper said, Aaron Rowand was eased into the majors by getting 302 at-bats in 2002.
