Lets do Football

Last month when we were all laying the groundwork for the First Annual Premiership, I mentioned possibly doing football again. Bringing back the H2H Super Bowl.

As you may or may not know, as a group, we have ventured down this path before. Twice I believe. The problem was, (a) I am not the worlds biggest football fan, and my motivation for doing it sucked, and (b) the football season begins when the baseball season really starts to matter, if you know what I mean. I always preferred fantasy basketball for that reason. [yes; a sport I plan on doing this year] .. So I always farmed out the H2HSB for someone else to run, and they had their own ideas, and eventually it just fizzled.

Running these leagues isn't easy.

But I think that with the new system all setup here, RDB, and looking at how easy it is to track everything right now, I don't see why we can't venture into the H2H Super Bowl for a third time.

We are going to need commissioners of course, and one heck of a "get out the word campaign".

We might as well get started before too many people make league commitments, so I will go ahead and fire up a registration sheet, but we are going to need players to go back to their forums and let people know ...

it is football time ..

We are also going to need a standard Game Settings. I don't remember what we used before, I'll go back and see if I can't find them, but I am of course open to suggestions for game settings, like number of running backs, wide receivers and bench. That sort of stuff. Don't forget Scoring is huge in football. Point per catch, half a point, none? All this stuff matters for fair and balanced game play.

I'll get the signup sheet up, but I need to hear back from everybody on (a) league commissioners, and (b) games settings/scoring.

wr

Great to finally see the H2HSB back.

I'll do the commish job for whatever need you want me to.

The Roster positions look fine

I'll leave it up to everybody else to help decide the scoring. The most important thing to me is balance. I hate it one category is overvalued or things like Runnings back are twice as valuable as wide outs. That sort of thing.

balance.

But remember since there are 2 RB and 3 WR those 2 RB should score about the same amount of points as the 3 WR do.

why not go 2-RB, 2-WR, and a flex (RB/WR), and then just balance the scoring between the two positions

Ok those settings above are not negotiable. Max moves maybe we could lower it a tad, but 40 feels about right. I'd like the playoffs to avoid week 17. The rest of the settings should be the same as our standard H2H play.

Keeping in that spirit, I'd like to balance the football a little too. We have the center fielder and middle relievers represented in our baseball league. Both key elements to any real baseball team, and i think we incorporate them well into our league.

So let's look at doing football like this.

  • QB
  • WR, WR, RB, RB, TE, W/R
  • K
  • D, D, DB, DB, DL, DL
  • BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN

That to me is perfect balance; 6 offensive and 6 individual defensive players, and then 6 bench. Oh yeah, a quarterback and a kicker. Why isn't fantasy football set up that way already?

We will revolutionize the game ... watch Tongue out

thoughts from anybody ..please.

There might be a couple first time fantasy football players or players who are inexperienced in terms of IDP. Maybe it's a better idea to keep things simple and just use a team DEF instead of IDPs. Especially since Yahoos! IDP rankings are completely off. Have you already looked at them?

People without knowledge of IDPs tend to pick by the Y! pre-ranking and will be screwed. This will not lead to fair and equal competiton.

And you also need to find a good scoring setting for thoise IDPs. Should they earn as many poiunts as the offensive players or only about 50% of it. I personally don't like it when IDPs score as many points as offensive players.

And 2 more things which are not really related to the scoring:

1. And there seems to be something wrong with the signup cheat. Every German except me is registered twice and I doubt they made the same mistake.

2. Do I see the H2H Stanley Cup lurking around the corner. Wink

2. Do I see the H2H Stanley Cup lurking around the corner

I tried to get that up and running in year one. it never caught fire. we can always try again.

Thats a fair point about IDP's. Maybe use team defense in the lower leagues, but IDP's in the championship leagues. Just a thought.

Personally, I like IDP's as it opens up a whole other player pool.

As for scoring IDP's, that is certainly open for discussion. I don't think i have ever played in a league where they are equal to a RB or something like that, but now you got me thinking ... I'd say 1/2 value so as not to make Sean Merriman the first overall pick.

Maybe seven bench instead of six, since there is bye weeks. How bout six bench without IDP's, seven bench players with IDP's.

We use IDP in our keeper league (but only 3) and we use the following settings:

-->

Roster Positions: QB, WR, WR, WR, RB, RB, TE, W/R, K, D, DB, DL, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN
Stat Categories: Passing Yards (25 yards per point) Passing Touchdowns (6) Interceptions (-2) Rushing Yards (10 yards per point) Rushing Touchdowns (6) Receptions (0.5) Reception Yards (10 yards per point) Reception Touchdowns (6) Return Yards (25 yards per point; 4 points at 100 yards) Return Touchdowns (6) 2-Point Conversions (2) Fumbles Lost (-2) Offensive Fumble Return TD (6) Field Goals 0-19 Yards (3) Field Goals 20-29 Yards (3) Field Goals 30-39 Yards (3) Field Goals 40-49 Yards (4) Field Goals 50+ Yards (5) Point After Attempt Made (1) Point After Attempt Missed (-1) Tackle Solo (1) Tackle Assist (0.5) Sack (2) Interception (3) Fumble Force (2) Fumble Recovery (2) Touchdown (6) Safety (3) Pass Defended (1.5) Block Kick (3)

In the end the IDP scored about 50% of the points of the offensive players. McGee scored a bit more than the other IPD because of those bonus points for Return Yards as did Bready on the offense but the rest was pretty equally distributed. The only problems is that under the top 25 points scoring IDP only 5 were DB. Maybe it's not perfect but it worked for us.

And if you want to use 6 IDP spots I think we need to add at least 2 bench spots because you'll have 5 more players on the roster you have to account bye weeks for.

wrveres's picture

Maybe increase the passes defended points or interceptions to get balance. Interesting.

I was looking at the bonus points stuff too, and wasn't sure about heading down that path. Thats why i prefer to let you experts chime in.

Also you make a good point about the bench spots and 6 IDP's. I have never been a fan of a huge bench, so maybe 3 IDP's is the way to go.

hmm.
