Captain's (B)log: H2HWS Playoffs Round 1

If you were following the daily updates on last week's Blog, you'll know that one of the 1st-round games was pretty much decided by midweek, but the other was subject to a dramatic late surge by one of the teams. But did they do enough to take the tie? Here are the results...

NFL Week 1, last minute decisions.

A collection of scribes to help you set your week one roster. If there is somebody you like to read regularly, let me know, and we will be sure to link to them. I will probably pare this list down a bit as the season goes on, in an attempt to just keep the best sources of information. hope it helps.

well there goes that season.

So yeah, I am pretty much toast. I own Carlos Quentin for $12.00 over the next couple of seasons in my 16 team keeper league. Many of you know it as the Hot Stove. Heck many of you play in it. Captain does, so does the Yote, and Kyle too. I am probably forgetting somebody but that thats not the point.

I currently reside in second place, eight points out, with about a 50% chance of catching the leader. I need wins and K's, and I am coming on strong. traded for Rich Harden, Chad Billingsley and a few other arms.

Chasing the Treble Week 22 - California Screamin'

Well, it appears that whatever Labor Day plans I had fell through and I figure to post my blog entry as scheduled. This last entry for the regular season is going to be more casual than usual as for some fantasy managers, their seasons are over while for those left standing, the real season begins: a 4-week stretch that promises action, drama,

The database aspect of RDB.

I just wanted to get out an idea of what I would like to do with the database aspect of RDB. Ideally, I am looking to have the database built for players. Not MLB players, but you.

Captain's (B)log: H2HWS Week 22

That's it. It's done. The regular season has drawn to a close. It was a dramatic final week in the H2HWS, with the final playoff positions changing on a daily basis. Let's find out which teams joined LA Thrashers & London Knights in the postseason...

Premiership Week 3 Recap: Brace Yourself for Redemption

The Premiership wraps up the month of August, heading into the one-week International break. We didn't have a full slate of games because of Manchester United's participation in last Friday's UEFA Super Cup exhibition game against Zenit St. Petersburg. So, those of you whetting their appetites over Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez, and erm, Darren Fletcher running wild on poor old Fulham would have to wait for another week. However, this week was a phenomenal week had you stuck with your preseason sleepers after two disappointing weeks.

Chatter: Bloomers and Busts

Cleveland Indians catcher Kelly Shoppach is 28 years old already. I find that some what shocking. I guess he has always had his career path blocked by two of the best in the game, Victor Martinez, and Jason Varitek, so I don't know if it is fair to say that Kelly Shoppach is a late bloomer or not, but it is sure a beautiful flower isn't it.

I snagged Shoppach up in two leagues when Victor Martinez went down. I'd even say that Shppoach is the reason for my rebound in the H2HWS. On that same Inglewood team, I also own Victor Martinez, who is currently residing on the DL with zero homeruns on the year. Martinez is going to have to show me a little something, once healthy, just to get a ride at utility. No way I am moving Shoppach. Eric Wedge could bench Kelly Shoppach, and I am not moving him.

Friar news and notes: Hairston done for the season

I am starting to believe this team is truly jinxed. I can trace it all the way back to Tony Junior hitting that two RBI triple off of Hoffman at the end of last season. Even Trevor said it was an odd moment, that things just didn't feel right up there on the mound. And Hoffman pitched a good pitch to junior too.

Tony just reached out, and got wood on it thats all.

Guzman hits for cycle

I think I mentioned once before that I picked Guzman up in my National League only, and then cut him a day or two later. Its a weekly league, so he never saw one at-bat. Worse, I have had shortstop troubles all season long. Currently the position is manned by Jeff Keppinger, but pretty much any scrub you can think of, I trotted out there at one time or another. It's been that kind of year.

UEFA Champions League 2008/09 Group Stage

My goodness, I've been deathly busy that I forgot about the UEFA Champions League draw this afternoon. Despite forgetting about the draw, instinctively I had the Champions League theme song in my head while I was out on my morning run, which is also played before every Champions League match. This led me to think about which team's fans, had the best atmosphere on European nights, but the answer is always the same: it's both Glasgow teams. It doesn't matter if it's Rangers or Celtic but Glasgow becomes a different animal on Champions League evenings and probably for good reason, given that the Scottish league has always been a Mickey Mouse league, dominated by Glasgow's Old Firm (Rangers and Celtic). With greater competition comes greater passion from the fans. I thought to myself, this morning, that it was too bad Rangers slipped up in the Champions League qualifiers but there's always Celtic. So, it's a coincidence that my boys, defending European Champion Manchester United are reunited with Celtic in the group stages.

Chatter: the price of doing business

I own Chris Young on a couple of fantasy leagues, so I am of course happy to have him back.

On the other hand, I do not understand why the Padres themselves are rushing him back. They should give him at least one rehab game, maybe even let him sit another week. Heck just shut him down for the year. What do the friars benefit from bringing Chris Young back for 4 or 5 meaningless starts. Are those 30 innings from Young really that important? is it a bonus thing?

Physically, The guy has had a brutal year. Let him heal.

Changing the rules in the middle of the season

Changing the rules in the middle of the season is a fantasy baseball no-no. Everybody around here knows that.

I think I have stated a few times that I am not a fan of instant replay. If you think that homeruns hit by Yankees is just the beginning, your right. Within five years, the list of replay-able items will fill two pages in the rules section. Count on it.
